2025
An amazing 6-country journey led LDS Young Singles through Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy—starting in charming Krakow and ending in romantic Venice, with amazing stops in Budapest and two beautiful Croatian cities in between.
2024
This unforgettable 3-country adventure took LDS Young Singles through six incredible cities across Italy, Austria, and the Czech Republic. We began in historic Rome and ended in enchanting Prague, with memorable stops in Siena, the Italian Alps, and beautiful Salzburg along the way.
2023
From the sunny streets of Barcelona to the snow-capped peaks of Switzerland, the excitement of Europa Park, and the romance of Paris—this incredible trip had it all! LDS Young Singles laughed, learned, and explored together, making every stop an unforgettable highlight.
Meet the Team
Jill Knapp
Owner, Travel Designer & Group Leader
Jill is the founder of Detour by Design and the creator of European Encounter. A former BYU geography professor, she and her late husband, Stan, led study abroad programs across Europe for many years before deciding to expand those trips to other YSA’s of the Church. Together, they had just begun planning the first European Encounter in 2023 when Stan was diagnosed with brain cancer. He passed away in 2024.
In Stan’s honor, Jill now carries that shared dream forward, planning trips for individuals and groups all over the world—but witnessing the magic of new friendships being created while simultaneously traveling through her favorite part of the world makes European Encounter her favorite.
Jill believes that the best trips have variety—busy and relaxed, big city and countryside, fun and meaningful . They surprise us, shape us, and stay with us.
Ryan & Angie Eggett
Trip Hosts & Experience Leaders
Ryan and Angie bring warmth, faith, and unbridled enthusiasm to every European Encounter. Ryan has taught in the Church Educational System for over two decades and currently teaches religion classes at at BYU while simultaneously working on the Church Music Committee preparing the new hymnbook. If you spent time at the MTC during the years of 2012 - 2023, you may be one of the roughly 100,000 missionaries he led as the choir director, bringing not only his musical talent, but his deep love of the gospel, to weekly practice session.
Ryan’s devotionals and music add meaning and insights to our trip, while Angie assists with in-country logistics and makes sure everyone feels included and connected. Together, they bring the group to life—building friendships, creating community, and helping everyone feel they belong.
Cassie Bowcut
Group Coordinator & Administrative Assistant
Cassie is the chief question answerer and master of logistics. Coming from a background of assisting several BYU study abroad programs to travel all over the world each year, she knows a lot about planning, organization, and keeping a lot of balls in the air. Cassie graduated with a degree in Experience Design & Management, and brings a unique perspective to each trip. She is heavily involved in the planning, and takes care of all of the administrative tasks leading up to the trip. Oh, and she is Jill’s daughter!
A mom of two beautiful boys and baby girl that she lost at birth, she spends most of her time taking care of their needs and enjoying the blessings of family life. She and her husband, McKay, directed the 2024 European Encounter, so she knows first-hand how crucial good planning is.
