A large part of this trip has been hiking, ranging from easy half day strolls to strenuous eight day marathons. Hiking is a great way to escape from the dust, gravel, honking (a favourite pastime of most Latin American drivers) and fumes. You often get to see more authentic local villages, more tranquil and undisturbed natural scenery, and sometime, if you're really lucky, you get to escape the seemingly constant flow of tourism through this area. The stories below sum up a lot of our hiking experiences in Central and South America. As a rule, we generally try to complete all hikes without tour guides (except where mandated or prohibitively difficult not to), and encourage more people to try to do the same!
